Volunteer in a daycare with children

Overall rating: 6.7 based on 1 reviews

Program Description

This is a project supporting single mothers, widows, grandparents with children and problem families in the Jocotenango area, by taking care of their children. The project offers three basic needs; food, education, and health. In education they help the children with homework reinforcement, they have a kindergarten for the small ones and a library. The children receive meals at the project, and if necessary, they receive pediatric medical care. Workshops for the parents are also organized, how to raise their children and how to deal with problems.

What can the volunteer do?
- Assist in the kindergarten classrooms
- Homework reinforcement or running the library
- Help in the kitchen is also possible
- Activities by own initiative too like art/music/handicraft lessons.
- With advanced Spanish, you can participate in the workshops.
- You can also come here for academic purposes (internship/thesis in pedagogics or psychology).

Highlights

In this project, you full days from 9 AM - 12 AM & from 2u30 PM to 5 PM, so it's perfect to combine your volunteering with Spanish lessons before your volunteer program, which is a nice way to improve your Spanish but also learn about the Guatemalan culture.

Qualifications

A beginner-intermediate Spanish level is helpful (enough to understand the instructions).
To improve your Spanish, we suggest online language lessons with a private Guatemalan teacher: www.learnspanishonline.gt.

Play is important work for children. Play helps children share with others and cope with their feelings while developing verbal and nonverbal communication skills. Play also helps develop children's fine motor development and helps them develop confidence. Volunteers usually assist with age-appropriate activities such as rocking or holding infants and helping toddlers and preschoolers with arts and crafts, reading, writing, dancing, singing and playing games
