Farming - Ragama
Program Description
This volunteer project is working with an orphanage and the community outreach projects that have been initiated to improve the well-being of the surrounded community. There are three central aspects to this project:
There are around 200 children who reside in this orphanage, a number of whom are special needs. Charitable donors and other caring members opened the orphanage. Volunteers will teach lessons for the orphanage children and those in the local community. These lessons take place on-site and will greatly benefit the children’s education, especially their English ability. You will live on-site as a volunteer while helping to support the local community. This is a great opportunity to get off the beaten track.
There is a farm around the orphanage that the older children tend. They care for poultry and crops and they learned environmentally safe organic farming methods. Volunteers will sometimes assit the famr manager. There is a kitchen garden, vegetable plots and even a fruit orchard. A large fish pond is used for irrigation and the rearing of tilapia and catfish. Also important to the farm are the free-range chickens and ducks. The eggs produced provide protein in addition to the livestock. Since it is a hot climate, farm work is concentrated around the cooler times of the day, so your workday will be in the morning and early evening. If it is too hot, then volunteers are free to enjoy their time in Sri Lanka or play with the orphanage children.
