Studying abroad in a country where the language you’re learning is the native language is a great advantage. You will be learning from people who have been speaking the language since birth versus a teacher who may have just learned it a few years before. You’ll also be able to step outside the classroom and do your “homework” immediately. You can practice speaking on your way back home with people on the street or at the shops. When you live in the country that you are learning in, language learning happens so much quicker. The key is to ensure the teachers who are teaching you have taught foreigners before as second language learners learn differently than babies.

Language schools can be a great and easy way to help you ease into a new culture as you’ll have the support of your teacher and classmates who are learning right along side of you. It’s also a great place to make friends that will last a lifetime! During your classes you’ll be attempting to use your new language to explain to your new friends about the fun things you did over the weekend. Forget boring textbook studying, when you attend a language school in a different country, it’s a lot more interesting. How to choose the best Language School for you

After you’ve chosen a country, search for reputable language schools by reading the comments past attendees have left about them. If you can’t find any comments, email the school and ask to speak with a past or current student. You may wish to choose a company who has language schools all around the world or a local company who only has 1 school in the city you’d like to live in. Either way, the best way to choose a language school is to visit all the options available. You may wish to forgo the school altogether and just hire a tutor.

If you’re on a tight budget, this may be a cheaper option as you can find a student who can teach you for a cheap rate. To choose this option, you will most likely need a friend to recommend someone to you or you can try placing an ad on a local website.

Useful Tips

1. Don’t skip class.

As you’re not getting a grade per se, you may be tempted to sleep in and skip a class or two. However, the more classes you attend, the faster you’ll learn the language. This will say you time and money in the end. Many students tell us that their classmates generally drop out over time leaving them with basically one-to-one personalized classes!

2. Make friends with the locals to help your pronunciation.

Don’t worry about making a complete fool of yourself. You will say some odd and crazy things that make no sense but don’t let that stop you from practicing with the locals. It gives everyone a good laugh and will help you in the long run.

3. Be realistic and preserve.

Depending on the language and your ability, you may pick up a language in 3 months or 3 years. Don’t give up if you’re not at the level you thought you’d be at after some time. People learn differently and some take longer than others. Just because it takes you a longer time than others, it doesn’t mean you can’t learn new languages. Try different methods and ask your school for advice if you aren’t happy with your progress.
