Program Description
As a volunteer in the Pokhara Valley in Nepal, you will have the opportunity to work with Tibetan refugees. With twelve refugee camps in Nepal, Global Citizens Network (GCN) specifically partners with four settlements: Tashi Palkheil, Jampaling, Tashi Ling, and Paljorling. All refugee camps are only a 45 minute plane ride away from Kathmandu. GCN has worked with a group of Tibetan refugee leaders called the Lodrik Welfare Committee since 1999. This partnership works with the local community to make decisions and improve local conditions. As a volunteer with this project, you will be able to be immersed in a different culture as you help make a difference in the lives of locals.
Pokhara Valley is a gorgeous Himalayan destination with plenty of characters. Volunteers have said, “Who knew that chickens were nocturnal? After the dogs barking at 12:30 AM, the roosters started a village telegraph system around 3:30. They are very loud and persistent. We got out of bed around 7 AM and had breakfast at 8:30 AM. Rice, eggs, fruit and potatoes with pork. Our hosts started work around 8:30, we started at 9:30. Our project is making 3 Latrines (out-houses) for three of the local houses.” Volunteers will be placed in different types of projects depending on current need. Our teams work with Tibetan villagers to build or refurbish local schools and community center. The villagers decide and finalize the projects so volunteers will be working alongside local members to finish these projects.
Tibetans are renowned for their hospitality and prior GCN volunteers have been taken on tour of local schools, to visit homes and even temples. Other volunteers have harvested rice or drunk tea with the local community.
