Volunteer Nepal Kathmandu: Teaching (Monks Monastery)

Overall rating: 10 based on 1 reviews

Program Description

It’s a tradition of Buddhist of sending to their children (Monk/nun) to the Monastery. Their level of English is very poor compare to other school children. Most of them are from poor families throughout Nepal. There are about 130 monks in Monastery ranging between 4 years and 18 years old. Most of the parents send their children to monastery for the sake of the better living condition and education.

Volunteers will get opportunity to teach English to the Monks/Nuns. You will work under the supervision of monastery teacher/administrator and get memorable experience. Volunteer can participate in various activities that occurred within the Monastery.

Note: Volunteers can bring anything that aids the teaching e.g. books, picture books, maps etc and make their learning more creative and interesting. It is recommended all the volunteers to take Nepali language class which helps communication during the placement with the staff and the students. This placement required 20-40 minute of traveling everyday from host family to the placement.

I enjoyed my time in Nepal a lot. I connected with the host family and spent most of my days at the Monastery with the nuns (It’s an experience that I would always remember in my heart). The local coordinator treated me like I was one of his own children with open arms. The teachers and nuns appreciate my help with teaching English to them even though I can’t speak Nepali. I had gone to two weddings, which I never been to one before in Kathmandu. I’ve experienced the local family community of Nepal and the experience to teach Buddhist nuns, which not many people can say. Something I couldn’t do in normal life in America.
