Program Description

This is a big institution that helps around 160 -200 children. Ages range between babies to 5 years old. Around 130 of these students are in residential care. Parents of the remaining students bring their children to school every day.

These kids suffer from varying conditions such as Downs Syndrome, Cerebral Palsy, Microcephaly, Autism, Epilepsy, and Deafness. Some other student simply has a learning disorder like Dyslexia.

Most of our students are unable to speak English,however, local staff will assist you at all times. This can be difficult, but also rewarding. The children show such excitement that you are there and will adore you as a volunteer and friend. If you so choose, you can take a class in Tamil, Hindi, Kanada the local language, If necessary only. This will help you learn some common phrases. This will assist you not only with the children, but with the locals in India, plus you get to learn a new language!

Highlights

• You’ll assist in improving the children's competence and awareness in social areas, such as understanding and following the rules of society, adjusting their behavior to the situation, problem solving and understanding others.
• While your work may still revolve around games and education, you’ll be giving children with Special Needs the skills to help them live independently in the future.
• In some cases, you may be working with older, more independent individuals. In this case, you may be helping young adults to develop occupational skills or interact with their employers more effectively.

Qualifications

• There are no qualifications for this volunteer position. All you need is a genuine care for children. The age minimum is 18+ years old.
• However, the minimum qualification is high school, basic English communication & Teaching skills, no language barrier, do not require any previous experience, if you have previous experience, can lead a project or a team. Its also very much impacts the project as you get immersed in the project.
