Volunteer in Belize at an Orphanage (Customized Programs)

Overall rating: 9.9 based on 3 reviews

Program Description

Volunteer at an orphanage and make a difference in the lives of 42 children. They are aged 2-16 and you will help the orphanage staff during their daily rounds. You will also be able to help develop activities and fun recreational events. During school terms, you will prepare the children’s breakfast and take them to school. In the afternoon, you will assist with farming, gardening, animal care, cooking, laundry, and cleaning. You will also work with the children on reading activities, assisting with homework, doing arts and crafts, playing sports, and being emotionally available to encourage the children.

This is an energetic facility so we need volunteers to be cheerful and vivacious. The temperature will be hot especially when you work outside or play with the children. Volunteers should aspire to be role models and friends to the children while also working as gardeners, famers, and counselors.

The orphanage has opened my eyes to the need of institutions like this for neglected children all over the world. These children are good kids with so much love in their hearts given their past circumstances. Think this experience is worth having especially with a group of friends. If people could come to the orphanage and experience the family culture they would leave with a higher level of gratitude in life... If moved enough they would return home and try to find ways to help the orphanage continue on helping children in need.

I will always remember my experience at the orphanage in Belize. I can't express how much the children impacted me during my stay and I hope more than anything that I will be able to go back and see them soon. They really help to put things into perspective and taught me how to love others.

The coordinator  is a gem! Wufie is great…a true asset to the organization. Numerous others. Here is an example: The main cook, Ms. V, heard that our team was comprised of medical professionals/students. She came and talked with us regarding her concern about a newly arrived child with epilepsy. As a result of our discussion, the coordinator asked if we would develop a presentation for the staff. Ultimately, we provided a 3-hour training session in Pediatric First Aid, CPR & Epilepsy. The staff was highly engaged during all facets of training and we were constantly answering questions throughout. Very dynamic, lots of laughter. Great experience for both teachers and students. One lady brought us homemade tamales later in the day as her way of saying thank you. We were very touched and accepted them most humbly.
