Program Description
Volunteers work with partner institutions to teach basic conversational English to children and adults, nuns and monks. You will be instructing Buddhist monks and nuns for up to 6 days a week and 4 hours each day. You will also arrange creative activities such as painting and games. Share you expertise with these students such as business, computing, science, and medicine. Monasteries will benefit from these subjects.
Nepal houses both Tibetan and Nepali monks. Since the Chinese invasion in 1959, Nepal has been home to thousands of Tibetan monks living in exile. Tibetans have remained a marginalized and underprivileged societal group even though they are free to express their cultural heritage and practice their religion.
Volunteers will have a unique ability to gain insight into Buddhist practice and culture through VIN’s project of Teaching English at a Buddhist Nunnery/Monastery. This project is the great way for international volunteers to learn about Buddhist culture and platform to teach English to Buddhist monks. The project aims to be an exchange between devoted practitioners of Buddhism and those from different cultures who can share language and other skills. You will have one thing in common; a desire to learn.
