Rural Community Volunteer Project, Nepal

Overall rating: 0 based on 0 reviews

Program Description

We are looking for volunteers to work on a variety of community projects in Nepal aimed at promoting social upliftment. Our projects include Working in children's homes, Teaching English in rural schools & in Bardia National Park, Traditional Farming Projects and Working in Health Centres.

Volunteer to Teach English

Volunteers are needed in government run schools in both Kathmandu, and the rural village of Gerkhu. These schools provide basic education for the typically poorer families, and as such there is a lack of experience English teachers. Your assistance will be invaluable in improving both the children's writing and speaking of English and helping them improve their future prospects.

No previous teaching experience is necessary, however to minimise disruption to the children you must volunteer for a minimum of 4 weeks.

Environmental Volunteering on a Rural Farming Project

This is an immersive project for those who want to experience rural life in Nepal where traditional farming methods are still commonly used.

You will live alongside a family and help them work in the rice fields of Chitwan. Dependent on the season there are many jobs to do. These involve milking the buffalo, planting and cutting rice or carrying it to the house. This is a hard physical project, however there is plenty of time to relax and chat to the locals or explore the surrounding area.

Working in a Children's Home

This project involves working in the Naurange Children's Home in the Chitwan region. Over 30 children aged 4 to 17 live there. As a volunteer you will be helping with the running of the home by cleaning, taking the children to school, and so on. There is also the opportunity to help the children by teaching them English and other skills, teaching them sports and helping with their homework. The aim of this project is to give the children a chance to interact with international childcare volunteers, learn new skills and an understanding of the world outside Nepal.

Working in a Health Care Centre

This project is located in the rural Gerkhu, an area without basic health care and where people die from basic ailments. In 2011 a medical centre was built which serves several thousand people from the surrounding area. This health care centre is vital in providing the basic care needed for people.

If you choose to volunteer at the centre you will be working alongside the Nepali staff at the centre, talking to patients and experiencing rural life in Nepal. This placement is ideally suited for medical students who want the experience of working in basic conditions, in a remote location.

Highlights

All of the above projects give volunteers a unique chance to immerse themselves in the Nepali lifestyle. It also gives volunteers the chance to give something really important back to rural areas still lacking in some basic amenities. Although the projects may be physically tough at times, they are doubly as rewarding as volunteers are able to see how their contributions help the local communities.

Qualifications

Volunteers should be aged 18 years upwards and speak English. All nationalities are welcome. Volunteers do not need any specific skills or qualifications, but any skills you do have will be useful for the projects. Volunteers should be self motivated, adaptable and flexible and willing to live and work in rustic conditions, particularly for the Traditional Farming Project. Projects are often located in rural, isolated villages and volunteers should be independent and mature, and able to manage with basic amenities, and limited access to modern facilities.
