Arrival Dates: SLV teams arrive in Sri Lanka once to twice a month, throughout the year. Exact leaving dates are given upon application.

Eligibility: 18+. Our aim is to recruit students, graduates or people who have been in employment and have relevant work or volunteering experience.

Placement Costs

SLV aims to keep placement costs as low as possible. We limit money spent on marketing; over 50% of the team are recruited by word of mouth and all coordinators are voluntary.

The SLV team volunteer in over 35 projects in the South of Sri Lanka. To ensure a diverse experience all volunteer
timetables include between 4-8 different projects and all volunteers take part in at least one teaching project, one
children’s project, and one special needs project.

Children Projects:

SLV partner with a number of children's homes, primary schools and temples to provide extra-curricular English-based activities and teaching. Our aim is to engage children with Spoken English in a fun and interactive way. Our approach is to be positive role models for the children and not caregivers.

Youth Teaching Projects:

SLV provides English conversation classes for youths aged 18-25 in order to help them improve their spoken English and thus employability. Classes vary greatly in size and ability level but have in common that the students attending are there voluntarily and so are eager to learn.

SLV loosely follow the British Council TEFL Curriculum and prepared lesson plans.

Special Needs Projects: SLV works with special needs centres that are underfunded and understaffed.

SLV aim to provide therapeutic activities via the medium of art, music, dance and teaching for the residents of these centres.

Psychology/Mental Health Projects:

SLV lead activities at psychiatric wards and residential centres for people with mental health disorders. These projects are some of the most challenging and volunteers are given training workshops through their placement by Psychologists, Psychiatrists and Mental Health Professionals.

Sports Coaching:

SLV provides the opportunity to coach a variety of sports including cricket, swimming, football and netball. Coaching projects are allocated based on volunteers’ experience.
