Pre Vet Project - Internship

Overall rating: 0 based on 0 reviews

Program Description

This is a “hands-on” internship course that interacts with wildlife sanctuaries in the Eastern Cape region. Interns will have the opportunity to ranch manage, gauge health, and capture wildlife on game reserves. This is a great opportunity for those who are interested in a lifelong career in veterinary medicine, animal research, or experiences with wildlife management.

Interns will get a variety of experiences, from anti-poaching to environmental conservation, and even the potential for direct wildlife contact. We have worked with many species including giraffes, lions, buffalos, rhinos, and elephants. Inters will assist with areas including helping veterinary surgeons, reintroduction and conservation, rehabilitation, and capturing game.

Projects sites:

The project is carried out on three different sites:

Mpongo is an established Big 5 reserve where interns will experience many types of African animal species including lions, elephants, rhino and others. Sabati is a conservation area that we are currently building up, and only recently introduced a number of species of game. Kubusi/Matola is our wilderness camp and is located in a deep gorge in the Kubusi Valley. Volunteers also work within the Matola Reserve, which features an impressive population of animal species. We have incorporated a conservation project in combination with a few unique safari adventure activities which will bring a some exciting recreational time.

Highlights

Interns will experience life in a wildlife management program that is genuine and involved with conservation. Elephant and buffalo tracking with telemetry is thrilling as is game capture and release. There are days of labour that involve patrolling perimeter fences and searching for traps, but these less exciting tasks are very important. This is not a safari operation, this is a conservation initiative. The ranch management aspects may not be as exciting as the high intensity work with animals, but it is still crucial to the success of this project.
