Program Description
As a volunteer on the island of Grenada, you will live in the Caribbean and help to protect Leatherback sea turtles. You will monitor their behaviour, assist with research, and spearhead community education initiatives.
Sea turtles on glancing on the face of extinction due to legal and illegal fisheries, accidental by-catch, habitat destruction, and the harvesting of eggs. Ocean Spirits partners with local communities to protect the beautiful occurrence of nesting and foraging turtles. Grenada has a wonderful biodiversity and we need volunteers to help keep it that way.
Research Assistant Volunteer Duties:
- Experience hands-on fieldwork with the world’s largest sea turtle since Research Assistants are active members of the research team
- Assist in reducing illegal egg poaching activities since nightly research patrols have reduced this threat by more than 60%
- Add to the conservation of Grenada’s turtles through local outreach efforts
- Encourage community participation. Just having Research Assistants in Grenada as volunteers with sea turtles grows local interest in marine turtles and the importance of Grenada’s coastline to these species
