Program Description

We work in the desert state of Rajasthan on the outskirts of the city of Jaipur. We focus on providing aid to families and children who live in the slums in this area. We provide information on nutrition and health, vocational training, and informal and formal education. Shrestha is registered under the Rajasthan Society Registration Act 1958.

Life in the slums

This slum area has families from across India including West Bengal, Uttar Pradesh, and Rajasthan. The only shelter these families have are insubstantial tent-style homes or homes made from mud. There are around eight people in each family and five or six children all sharing one room.

Individuals do not have fixed professions and need to rely on begging, shoe polishing, garbage collection, or other similar jobs in order to make a living. They usually do not even make enough to meet their daily needs. Parents are often unable to provide medicine, clothing, or food for their children.

Parents also do not have enough money to send their children to school. These are motivated and talented kids but they are often only able to find work alongside their families rather than attend school.

Breaking the Cycle

We seek to break the poverty cycle that negatively impact the lives of these children. Education will allow children to aspire to higher economic opportunities and lift them out of the pattern of their parents.

We are also determined to keep families together. Slum children will often run away b
