Program Description
We place participants in independent Human Rights Organizations that seek to provide monitoring and rights of all persons. The two recognized human rights organizations where we place volunteers/interns are The Human Rights Advocacy Center (HRAC) and Commonwealth Human Rights Initiative (CHRI).
The situation of human rights in Africa and for that matter Ghana is generally reported to be poor, and it is seen as an area of grave concern according to the UN, and non-governmental observers. While many countries have laws and regulations recognizing basic human rights for all citizens, these are not always recognized. Extensive human rights abuses still occur in several parts of Africa, often under the oversight of the state.
The Human Rights Advocacy Center (HRAC) organization's in Ghana is dedicated to the promotion and protection of human rights. Their areas of activities include: Rule of Law, Access to Justice, Respect of the Constitution, Police Accountability, Children's Rights, Women's Rights and Right to Information. Through cutting-edge research, education, and advocacy, the organization saves lives, fights injustice, restores peace, and builds the human rights movement around the world. The organization deals with issues of reproductive rights (harmful traditional practices such as female genital circumcision), issues of rape, child trafficking, assault, unlawful detention and eviction, etc.
