Program Description

CEA (El Centro de Apoyo Escolar, or tutoring centre) functions from Monday to Friday in the morning and afternoon and volunteers may participate in either or both sessions. As a CEA volunteer, you will help create a safe space for the children and help reinforce that learning can be fun. CEA also aims to reduce children's working hours on the streets, provide them with support which they may not have access to at home, and avoid school drop outs.

The responsibilities of a CEA volunteer are as follows:
Assist the children with their homework and other primary level schoolwork in a variety of subjects, including Maths, Spanish Reading a Writing, Science and English
Help maintain good order in the classroom
Provide discipline and structure necessary to create positive study habits
Prepare educational and recreational activities for children after finishing their homework
Accompany the children to the library for freetime

Highlights

In this program you will spend time each day with the same group of children, giving you the chance to build relationships with them, get to know them, and make a difference to their motivation and enthusiasm for their studies.

Qualifications

Requirements:
- Two-month minimum commitment.
- Intermediate Spanish.
- Grade school knowledge of reading, writing and basic math
Assets:
- Commitment longer than two months.
- Advanced Spanish.
- Experience tutoring and working with children who have learning disabilities.
