Get involved in Hands-on Animals Rescue Work!

Overall rating: 0 based on 0 reviews

Program Description

The Project:

This shelter espouses the “Right to Life” mentality and helps to rescue, rehabilitate, and re-home animals that have been neglected, abandoned, and abused.

There are around 400+/- animals are cared for and provided with food, shelter, veterinary care, exercise and positive interaction with people until they can be placed in loving homes. The center additionally provides much needed animal medical support to the less fortunate communities in its area.

The shelter is always in need of help and there are never enough hours in the day to get to everything that desperately needs to be done.

You will be involved in all the daily tasks and duties, which means you will be spending lots of time with the animals. The dogs need as much human interaction, training and exercise as possible, the puppies and cats need some pampering, grooming and lots of LOVE.

You will also help with maintenance tasks such a painting, repairing kennels, cleaning kennels etc. In order to keep the facility well accessible for potential adopters and comfortable and hygiene friendly for its FurKidz, the shelter needs help with many practical tasks.

Costs:
This volunteer position is unpaid and you will be responsible for all expenses such as flight, accommodation and meals during your stay.

The center is a registered non-profit organisation and can unfortunately not carry these costs for you.

Accommodation:
You will live together with other interns and volunteers in a modern, furnished and fully equipped apartment 100m away from the beach and within walking distance to many shops, bars and restaurants.

You will share your room with one other volunteer. Wifi Internet is available (pay as you go) and the apartment has an equipped kitchen, a large shared fridge and a washing machine. The apartment complex has a rooftop pool and braai (barbecue) area with beautiful views over the ocean and Chapman’s Peak.

The area is very safe and a MyCiti bus stop is located just outside the complex. Many entertainment and tourist attractions are within walking distance, the ocean is right there and you can often smell the sea breeze in your room.

Meals:
You will take care of your own groceries/meals and will have an equipped kitchen to cook in. A supermarket as well as some nice restaurants and take away places are about 3min walk away.

Duration and Dates:
Due to the nature of the work a minimum of a 1 month stay is required. Volunteer positions are available throughout the year.

Fee:
Euro 590/month

Importance of Project:
There is a safe and established tourist society in South Africa, a beautiful country with much to offer in the way of wildlife and an exciting metropolis.

However, there are large ghettos and townships with hundreds and thousands of unemployed families and migrant workers. Within these townships that are usually impoverished are an overabundant population of dogs and cats.

These animals breed quickly without control or supervision in high density environments. In fact, dog fighting is a widespread and decriminalized form of animal abuse within these areas.

There are also many who do not understand that a dog is a lifelong commitment and end up making a hasty decision to buy a puppy from pet shops or backyard breeders and then abandon the animals when life becomes inconvenient.

There is a strong need for safe homes for these rescued animals since there is a staggering number of incoming animals in South African shelters.
