Forest Conservation Program

Overall rating: 0 based on 0 reviews

Program Description

Volunteer with the Madagascar Research and Conservation Institute. The Forest Conservation Program requires that volunteers monitor the region around Nosy Komba, specifically the wildlife and forest.

Volunteers engage in a range of techniques for field survey to learn about the biodiversity of Lemurs, Birds, Reptiles, Amphibians and other Small Mammals.

We are currently undertaking long term projects on Black Lemur (Eulemur macaco macaco) ecology, reptile surveys in six different habitats, bird surveys along the coast, in the forest and in plantations, and butterfly surveys through various habitats; however, personal projects/university studies are welcomed.

Survey sites are situated on Nosy Komba, a volcanic island without roads. Climbing over rocks and up steep mountain trails may be necessary to reach the sites.

Volunteers with this program will learn about identifying species and how to analyze, collect and collate data, deploy equipment, and conduct surveys in the field. This is a valuable opportunity to learn about a diverse ecosystem while spending time in Madagascar.

Highlights

Volunteers have the opportunity to explore the Ankarana Forest Reserve in Northern Madagascar on a 5-day excursion.

Volunteers who participate in this program for 10 or more weeks are eligible to be a part of the 10-day eco boat safari, visiting several remote islands and villages. This tour introduces conservation initiatives to local communities whilst allowing volunteers to explore different parts of Madagascar.

Qualifications

No qualifications are necessary as training will be given.
