Program Description

Elderly homes are a refuge for numerous elderly people. They are free to watch television and listen to the radio while also being able to practice their religion. There are some who are without families and others who are immobile. Some of the elderly folk are having issues with mental and physical health and so they have come to these centers. We are looking for volunteers who will not only care for our patients physically, but who will also strive to improve the happiness of each of our patients. They are in need of care and affection and you will make a difference in their lives if you volunteer with this group. The center is situated in Nelundeniya in the Warakapolaa Divisional Secretariat region which is 60 km away from Colombo. We are managed by a Board of Directors.

Qualifications

Have experience with informal and community education
Be able demonstrate an ability to work independently
Be able demonstrate a passion for using education for development
Have the ability to successfully manage their time and prioritise tasks
Be fluent in English
Be capable and comfortable adapting to life in a less developed country with basic living conditions
Be able to adjust to life in another culture and a foreign language, and be able to work at all times with cultural sensitivity
Ideally have previous experience living, working or travelling in a developing country, though this is not essential
Be financially independent
Able to work under pressure

No specific qualifications are required to join our elderly care project. However, interested individuals should have a passion and eagerness to help underprivileged elderly people. Volunteers should have a basic understanding of the English language in order to effectively work within these elderly care centers. Participants should also be flexible, adaptable, and open to experiencing a new culture.
