Program Description
Become a volunteer with MyGapYear Community Build Project and focus on benefiting the homeless community who reside in Siem Reap’s slums. You will help to provide homes to families that have been selected due to their need. Lend a hand and help to build these houses from scratch.
You will be a part of all levels of constructing houses from digging the holes to setting foundations, mixing cement, the construction of frames, and any other work that involves carpentry. You will also be involved with helping to add a roof. The family that the house will go to will also help build so that they can learn skills that are translatable to a career. Since you are so closely involved, you will be able to see hard work, dedication, and appreciation of these families.
This is an extremely rewarding project, but it is a physically demanding adventure that requires perseverance.
Donation Requirements
The costs for constructing a single house are around $1,200 USD, although there is some variation depending on the particular house. There are some houses that need to be placed on stilts since the area is prone to flooding. Other houses will cost less since we are able to use leftover materials from the construction of a previous home. Once we have assessed and picked a family, we can provide you with an accurate quote. All funds donated will go entirely to the purchase of building material, delivery, and wages for construction workers. Since you will oversee the project from start to finish, you will be able to pass the money over personally and even receive receipts. Our team is more than happy to help you fundraising ideas and other avenues for raising money. If you are volunteering as a group, then you can divide the costs up as long as the total equals the final cost for building the house.
