Program Description
Volunteers are invited to join the Children of Fire Team in Johannesburg in working towards providing medical treatment for child burn survivors from all over Africa. Volunteers will be involved in office work, planning long term medical treatment schedules, planning outreaches to other parts of Africa, medical research, tutoring, and planning the dream of a dedicated children's hospital in Southern Africa. They will join a team of passionate and dedicated people already working towards the above.
Volunteers will work very closely with the founder and Director, Bronwen and will also have an opportunity to work with the sister charity, Johannesburg School for Blind and Low vision Children that was founded for the very first child assisted by Children of Fire, Dorah who is Blind and no school would accept her. Volunteers should expect to liaise with Doctors, nurses, occupational therapists, social workers and other government officials. They should also expect to travel to the homes of some of the children which might be rural and to work in the squatter camps where the charity has a reading scheme every Sunday morning. This charity also assists when there is a fire and, at very short notice, volunteers might be called upon to help those displaced by fires as the charity provides emergency supplies in those circumstances.
