Blue Ventures Lionfish Culling Project in Belize

Overall rating: 0 based on 0 reviews

Program Description

The lionfish has continued to expand since the first documented incursion in the 1980s in Florida. They are now found increasingly in Belize, especially since 2008. Lionfish have no predators to monitor their growth and possess voracious appetites. They are a large threat to the Caribbean coral reef. Volunteers will help to monitor the invasion of lionfish in the Bacalar Chico Marine Reserve. Scuba dive and help to cull the lionfish.

Our lionfish culling expedition offer volunteers from around the world a unique opportunity to get involved with our marine research and community conservation work.

Expedition volunteers are at the heart of everything we do and we’d love to have you join us!

- Learn how to survey and hunt invasive lionfish
- Acquire your lionfish hunting licence
- Work alongside international scientists for an award winning marine conservation organisation
- Learn about the marine environment
- Dive daily in a UNESCO World Heritage site and improve your dive skills
- Contribute to important local and regional research on lionfish
- Explore the diverse habitats of the Bacalar Chico Marine Reserve

Anyone can join an expedition providing they are in a reasonable state of fitness; we demand that volunteers are checked physically by a Doctor prior to departure, to ensure a good level of health and you will need to complete medical forms that your Doctor must sign. Volunteers must also be comfortable in the water and able to swim 400m confidently and tread water for 2 minutes unaided. We welcome volunteers from all walks of life and all ages to join our expeditions but you must already be qualified to PADI Advanced Open Water or equivalent. All volunteers are trained by our scientific staff in marine research and on-the-ground conservation.
