Volunteer to Teach in Cambodia

Program Description

Be a volunteer in Cambodia and teach English to locals. Program participants will be instructors of English at a school that focuses on arranging conversational English for Cambodian students. This project attempts to create funding for an NGO that works to help rural communities in Northern Cambodia. This NGO has launched initiatives that work to alleviate poverty, increase sanitation, help agriculture, and promote environmental conservation. The students that volunteers teach pay an affordable fee which is then channeled back to the NGO.

- Courses will be taught on a part-time basis as students attend one hour classes from Monday to Friday for 10 weeks.

- You may be responsible for one-on-one tutoring sessions focused on conversation.

- While students can be aged 13-40, volunteers will usually instruct secondary school and university level students.

- Lesson plans, books, and support will be provided by the school so that teachers will always have a network for help.

- Volunteers will teach up to five hours each weekday. Volunteers will also spend time preparing for classes.

- Typical schedules are 6:00AM to 8:00AM, a break, and then two hours of class between 4:00PM and 8:00PM. Students usually attend these conversation English classes before or after work or school.

- Students have a basic foundation of English but have not had the opportunity to practice with foreigners.

Highlights

As a volunteer in Phnom Penh, you will be able to experience the local culture of Cambodia as well as gain valuable experience as an English instructor. You will be able to travel around and tour historic sites and local markets. This will broaden your worldview and you will make real impacts on these students.

Qualifications

- 18 years and older
- Cultural sensitivity and respect
- Fluent spoken English (all nationalities welcome)
- All volunteers also need to do a Background Criminal check and email us a scanned copy
- Teaching experience and/or qualifications are an advantage, but are not required. All volunteers receive two days of teaching orientation, to help them get started.

What`s Included

The total cost to join this programme for 3 months is £750. This covers your rental for the full 3 months in the volunteer house, all meals (except on weekends and school holidays), in addition to the costs of house maintenance charges, all training and orientation, organised 1 week trip, plus project backup and support. In addition, some of the monies go towards the Cambodian NGO that the school is supporting to improve the welfare of rural communities in the country. If you choose to live and eat independently, then you would just have to pay the £170 deposit/application fee, and make your own food/lodging arrangements.
