Program Description
Spoleto Study Abroad is an arts & humanities summer immersion program for high school students, grades 9-12. Located in the hilltop town of Spoleto, Italy, this program is designed for high school students who are interested in a hands-on program in filmmaking, visual arts, photography, vocal music, creative writing, or drama. Students apply to a specific area of artistic interest. The program offers students the opportunity to explore the rich cultural and artistic heritage of Italy; to work closely in small groups with talented faculty and like-minded peers; and to grow artistically, academically, and personally.
The historic town of Spoleto is a breathtakingly beautiful medieval city providing a safe and inspiring setting for the students to live and study. In addition to exploring the treasures of Spoleto, students take twice-weekly excursions to cities in Tuscany and Umbria, such as Florence, Siena, Tivoli, and Orvieto. Students and staff live together in an incredible 15th- century convent in the historic section of town, a short walk to classes and studios. Meals are served at a family-owned 4-star restaurant, featuring the inspired local cuisine of Tuscany and Umbria.
This is a unique opportunity for a focused immersion in an area of artistic interest by working closely with talented faculty and peers. The continuity of studio time, while in a supportive environment rich with history, art, culture, and beauty, is profoundly transformative for a student. The students build meaningful friendships and self-confidence by learning, living and traveling with a dynamic group of artistic peers. Students having completed Spoleto Study Abroad have a competitive edge over their peers on college and job applications.
The program dates for 2015 are July 9 – August 2, 2015.
