Social Work in a Latin American Context

Overall rating: 0 based on 0 reviews

Program Description

The CGEE program for Social Work students has been designed to replace a semester curriculum typically taught at home during a spring semester of a junior's academic year. Our mission: "to develop cross-culturally competent, ethical social work professionals with a global perspective by providing a semester of transformative, experiential learning focused on social and economic justice."

Courses are taught in English, no Spanish pre-requisite is required for the program.

The "Social Work in a Latin American Context" program in Mexico is based in Cuernavaca, a city known for its perennial springtime (70-80 degrees), which is located about a 1 1/2 hours drive south of Mexico City. A city of more than one million, Cuernavaca is also known for its innovative grass-roots education programs, economic cooperatives, and base Christian communities inspired by liberation theology.

Please note that only students that are social work majors at CSWE-accredited institutions who meet the pre-requisites for the program will be considered.

Highlights

Students will learn directly from social work practitioners, social welfare policy makers, and community leaders, and will take part in fieldwork in a Mexican organization.

In addition to replacing a semester at home in a social work program, by choosing to study abroad in Mexico, students will gain valuable knowledge and skills for working with diverse and immigrant populations back in the U.S.

Spanish-speaking practicum opportunities in the Cuernavaca community, along with our 30 year history in the region make CGEE a great choice for any student looking to truly gain an understanding of Mexico and its rich culture.

What`s Included

Two houses in Cuernavaca serve as a home base for most students. Four week homestays are an integral part of the academic program.

Regional Travel within Mexico including rural and urban travel.

The Social Work in Mexico program has a short, two-week exchange experience with Mexican social work students studying at Escuela Nacional de Trabajo Social de la UNAM (Universidad Nacional Autonoma de Mexico) in Mexico City. This exchange allows CGEE students to learn from, and alongside Mexican Social Work students to further develop an understanding of the Social Work process in Mexico.
