Program Description
The Middlebury School in Cameroon offers an exceptional academic program to undergraduates at U.S. colleges and universities. Students who have completed five semesters of French training are invited to participate in the program under the Middlebury Language Pledge®, a commitment to speak exclusively the target language for the duration of their time abroad.
Students take a combination of the following types of courses:
1. Courses in culture, social sciences, language, and literature organized for program participants and taught by local faculty in French
2. Courses alongside Cameroonian students at Université catholique de l’Afrique centrale
3. Credit-bearing internships
Cameroon is often described as "Africa in miniature" because it exhibits all major climates of the continent. Home to roughly 240 ethnic groups, with as many distinct language and dialects, diversity abounds. As Cameroon's economic and political capital, Yaoundé is an ideal place for immersion into Francophone African life.
Linguistic development and cultural understanding are at the core of the Middlebury Schools Abroad, and students have many opportunities for immersion, from coursework entirely in French to housing with local families; from internships and volunteer work to activities among the student body of Université catholique de l’Afrique centrale. Our goal is to provide an enriching academic experience and to help students to actively engage in their new environment.
