Middlebury School in Italy: Ferrara
Program Description
The Middlebury School in Italy offers an exceptional academic program to undergraduates at U.S. colleges and universities. Students who have completed five semesters of Italian training are invited to participate in the program under the Middlebury Language Pledge®, a commitment to speak exclusively the target language for the duration of their time abroad. Our goal is to provide an enriching academic experience and to give students the best chance of actively engaging in their new environment. Linguistic development and cultural understanding are at the core of the Middlebury Schools Abroad, and students have many opportunities for immersion, from coursework entirely in Italian to housing with local families; from internships and volunteer work to activities among the student body of our host institution.
The greatest advantage of studying in Ferrara is that this charming university town with its slow rhythm gives students a chance to take in authentic ferrarese life. The historic center, a favorite walking venue, is filled with monuments, palazzi, churches, and a renowned cathedral. Ferrara is a small city in the Emilia Romagna region of Italy, largely untouched by tourism yet full of history and culture.
Students take a combination of the following:
1. Credit-bearing internships
2. Seminars to supplement university courses
3. Direct enroll courses at the Università di Ferrara
4. Middlebury-organized core course
