Middlebury School in China: Kunming
Program Description
The Middlebury School in China offers an exceptional academic program to undergraduates at U.S. colleges and universities. Students who have completed two years of Chinese language training are invited to participate in the program under the Middlebury Language Pledge®, a commitment to speak exclusively the target language for the duration of their time abroad.
Kunming, located in Southwest China near the borders of Vietnam, Laos and Myanmar, is known as the "City of Eternal Spring." Kunming's parks - combined with the temperate climate of Southeast Asia - make it a very livable city with a strong "outdoor" culture. Kunming is also a very multicultural city, clearly demonstrating the influences of the 25 ethnic minorities residing in Yunnan Province. The host institution, Yunnan University, is centrally located in Kunming's charming and bustling downtown area, adjacent to the Green Lake and its adjoining park.
Students take a combination of the following types of courses:
1. Kunming Impressions core course
2. One-on-one tutorial
3. Electives in advanced language, environmental studies, anthropology and Southeast Asian studies
4. Credit-bearing internships or direct enroll courses for qualified students in the second semester
Linguistic development and cultural understanding are at the core of the Middlebury Schools Abroad, and students have many opportunities for immersion, from coursework entirely in Chinese to housing with local students.
