Overall rating: 0 based on 0 reviews

Program Description

The ecological water quality of marine coastal ecosystems in Eastern Aegean islands will be assessed, by using biological elements such as benthic macroinvertebrates, according to the requirements to the Water Framework Directive (WFD). Macrozoobenthic communities comprise of sensitive and tolerant species, according to their degree of tolerance to stress factors, thus, constituting important biological indicators. Students will have the opportunity to examine different proposed macroinvertebrate-based methodologies, based on biological indices such as: disturbance-sensitive species composition, richness (S), diversity (Shannon diversity H’), density etc., coupled with established biotic indexes (eg: BENTIX, AMBI, BOPA, BQI). Hydromorphological and physicochemical parameters, as well as habitat structure, will be also considered in order to provide a safer and more integrated water quality status.
