Program Description
This course aims to improve the effectiveness of communication in university lectures and small-group classes where the lecturer or students, or both, are non-native speakers of English. It is designed for non-native speakers of English who are or will be lecturing or teaching their specialist subject through the medium of English at university. In some countries this is called tertiary CLIL (Content and Language Integrated Learning).
Class Size: maximum 12 participants

Participants and Entry Requirements:
Participants are expected to have at least two years' experience of lecturing at a university and to have completed the appropriate training. This course is not suitable for teachers of English.

Highlights
Course Dates: 24 July - 28 July 2017 (1 week)The course is based on 20 timetabled hours per week - five mornings and three afternoons.
This course features a range of activities: group and pair discussion, individual analysis and preparation, mini-lectures. The emphasis is on active participation, reflection and discussion of language, communication and teaching strategies. Participants will be asked to bring material, in print or electronic form, for a 10-minute mini-lecture on a topic of their academic specialism.

The course aims to:- raise awareness of specific difficulties for non-native speakers of English in listening in lectures, and asking and answering questions in lectures
- raise awareness of differences between spoken and written academic English to make lectures more listener-friendly.
- develop strategies for making lectures and classes in English more accessible to non-native speakers
- provide the opportunity for participants to put these strategies into practice by giving mini-lectures and receiving feedback
- enhance participants’ confidence and skills in resolving student/lecturer communication problems
