Program Description

French Beginners 1 (autumn term) provides complete beginners of French with a solid foundation in the four language skills (listening, speaking, reading and writing). The course introduces basic grammatical forms, essential frequent vocabulary and key aspects of pronunciation. Participants on the course will have the opportunity to practise communicating in French by discussing everyday topics in class, such as habitual activities, food and drink, likes and dislikes, etc.

Standard French is based on the usage of Paris and linguistic issues, such as borrowing from other languages, are monitored by the Académie Française. French belongs to the Romance (or Italic) branch of the Indo-European language family and is a descendant of Latin. Closely related to Italian, Catalan and Spanish, it shares a greater similarity with the dialects of southern France, collectively known as ‘Provençal’.
