Program Description

Our internship program is designed to provide field experience in International Development while learning about Central America. A variety of internship focus areas are available. Interns will learn how to plan, design and implement different development programs while working closely with a ViviendasLeón Program Officer. Interns will live with local families, explore the beautiful city of León and the surrounding countryside during this 2-week program.


Our program cost includes homestay lodging, in-country transportation/airport transportation, breakfast and dinner, local cell phones, on-site coordinator available 24/7, Spanish language classes, cultural tours, dance and crafting lessons, seed grants for community projects, a stipend for materials/supplies, and training lectures/activities.

Applicants must demonstrate an interest in identifying solutions to development while working side by side with their peers and community members. Our internship program seeks students who are interested in one of the following projects: Public Health; Grant Writing & Research; Marketing, Outreach, & Public Relations; Social Media & Photography; Agroforestry & Environmental Awareness; Education; Youth Sports; Graduate Student Thesis; Computer Training; Music, Art, & Dance. Students applying will need to have some Spanish language experience prior to starting their internship. This is a great asset as you get to share and learn new things from our community members.

Internship Types

What`s Included

During the interns time in Nicaragua, they will spend part of the day in our ViviendasLeon office in the center of Leon and then during the second half of the day head off to the rural communities to do fieldwork. During the work week, interns will opportunities to learn from Nicaraguan experts more of the context as well as work intensively with our staff to develop, refine, and implement the intern’s project. During the weekend's interns have free time to explore local and regional sites as well.
