Program Description
Why study Medical Natural Sciences at VU Amsterdam?
The field of medical sciences is developing incredibly fast. While the first pacemaker was too large to implant, nowadays these devices are the size of a matchbox and doctors can set them remotely. Such technological advances call for scientists with an innovative and clever approach to medical research. Medical Natural Sciences is a multidisciplinary programme that combines physics and chemistry with medicine. It will equip you perfectly for future developments in medical research, in all their complexity.
STRUCTURE OF THE PROGRAMME
Medical Natural Sciences starts with introductory and advanced courses that combine subjects in physics and chemistry with clinical-based topics. You will write a literature thesis, join one of the participating research groups and possibly opt for an internship abroad. You will also have some more specialized courses, to elaborate your knowledge and prepare you for the academic field. These courses can be chosen from a selected list and can (either) be more physically, chemically or physiologically oriented.

Highlights
The Master’s programme in Medical Natural Sciences presents an opportunity for combining scientific subjects with practical-based subjects. One path in the programme (former Medical Physics specialization) is the only university programme in the Netherlands, outside of physics itself, that meets the requirements set by the Dutch Society for Clinical Physics for admission to its training programme in clinical physics. If you want more information about this path, please contact the master coordinator. What`s Included
The master’s in Medical Natural Sciences is a two-year programme worth 120 ECTS. During this time, you will take compulsory courses plus a number of optional courses. Your own research is an important part of the programme, which you could perform in one of the participating research groups.
