Program Description

Why study Mathematics at VU Amsterdam?
Mathematics is a vibrant, multifaceted and versatile field, focusing on the study and development of techniques to tackle pure and applied mathematical questions. Often, the dividing line between theory and practice is illusory. Mathematical theory, developed for a specific problem, often finds its way into unexpected applications. The Department of Mathematics at VU Amsterdam maintains close ties with organizations where mathematical principles are applied, including financial companies and other businesses, VU University Medical Center and biomedical research groups.

STRUCTURE OF THE PROGRAMME
The Master’s programme in Mathematics consists of specialized courses, optional courses and a Master’s project, culminating in the Master’s thesis in your second year. You can carry out this project under the supervision of a staff member from the Department of Mathematics, or externally at a company or research facility. The Mathematics Department at VU Amsterdam has an excellent reputation as a training and research institute, active in areas that vary from the purely theoretical to the highly applied. The Departments of Mathematics at the Dutch universities have joined forces to offer joint courses through the MasterMath initiative. This gives you an ideal opportunity to interact with students and lecturers from other institutes in the Netherlands.
