Program Description

Why study Ecology at VU Amsterdam?
VU Amsterdam (VU) offers a joint programme in Ecology and Evolution with the University of Amsterdam (UvA). This collaboration has resulted in a high-quality, research oriented Master of Science programme. Students can enjoy the expertiseof two universities: providing a rich and varied programme of courses as well as ample pure or interdisciplinary research projects at both universities. This Master combines lectures, workshops, masterclasses, and experimental work in both field and lab, providing you a broad scientific education.

STRUCTURE OF THE PROGRAMME
The two-years Master’s programme in Ecology is a unique programme and is taught entirely in English. The programme offers you a broad package of courses and research projects which provide a firm theoretical and professional base to a master’s degree with a distinct personal profile. The first four months of each year are spent on coursework. The remainder of each year you spend on a literature survey and research projects. You will share classes with students from the partner university. Half of the courses are organized by VU, the other half by UvA, while teachers of both universities are engaged in all the courses. You will do two research projects of which the first one has to take
place at VU or UvA and the second may be completed at another university or scientific research institute.
The two-year programme is full-time, covering 120 ECTS.

Highlights

The VU masters’ programme in Ecology and Evolution has an explicit research-oriented character and is designed to provide its students the knowledge, skills and insights to operate as an independent professional scientist in the fields of ecology and evolution and to become a promising candidate for a subsequent PhD position or other research-related function in a fundamental or applied ecological field.
