Program Description
The Financial Management specialization of the Master’s programme in Business Administration at VU Amsterdam will give you the tools and competencies you need for managing, controlling and financing business activities. Financial Management is crucial in all these areas and it plays a dominant role in the banking and insurance industries. Financial management professionals have to be experts in three major fields: they must have a thorough understanding of how to acquire financial resources (Corporate Finance), must understand the financial environment (Financial Market) and must have a keen awareness of how to manage and report internal financial flows (Management/Financial Accounting).
The programme has two focus areas: financial management in business (Corporate Finance and Accounting) and financial management in the financial sector (Banking and Insurance).

Although most of our alumni go on to a professional career in financial management, developing an academic attitude is nevertheless one of the top priorities in this programme. We then link academic theory to practical application in the world of financial management. You will come to see and appreciate that an academic attitude and professional insights are complementary and highly beneficial to professional career development. The specialization in Financial Management is built on three main pillars: Corporate Finance, Management/Financial Accounting and Financial Markets.Financial management connects the internal business functions of the firm with the financial market and its institutions. This is why the specialisation starts with three main compulsory courses: Advanced Corporate Financial Management addresses the main functions of financial management, Financial Markets and Institutions analyses the external financial environment, while Advanced Management Accounting explains the main financial management issues within companies.
