Program Description
SCC is considered a 2-year college but most international students require additional time to meet the prerequisite course to obtain their desired degree or to transfer.
International students come to community colleges for several different reasons:
1. Obtain an Associate’s Degree and General Education to Transfer to a University
2. Obtain General Education to Transfer to a University
3. Obtain an Associate’s Degree
The Associate degree may be obtained by the completion of all required courses for a major (18 units or more) with grades of “C” or better in each course, fulfill general education requirements, satisfy competencies, and sufficient electives to meet a minimum total of 60 units with a grade point average of 2.0 (“C” average).
The Associate Degree for Transfer (ADT) student completion requirements (as stated in SB1440 law):
1. Obtainment of a minimum grade point average of 2.0.
ADTs require that students must earn a “C” or better in all courses required for the major or area of emphasis.
2. Completion of a minimum of 60 semester units or 90 quarter units that are eligible for transfer to the California State University, including both of the following
a.) A minimum of 18 semester units or 27 quarter units in a major or area of emphasis, as determined by the community college district.
b.) The California State University General Education-Breadth Requirements or the Intersegmental General Education Transfer Curriculum (IGETC).
