Dream Internships in Atlanta

Dream Internships in Atlanta

Atlanta is the capital of Georgia and the largest city in the Southeastern United States, making it a city with job prospects in many industries. Two major airlines are based out of Hartsfield Jackson International Airport, the world’s busiest. Countless companies have set up their headquarters here for the large workforce and ease of entry.

Look at sites like Monster and Indeed for internships available in Atlanta, as well as the websites of the companies you’d like to work for. Some companies may not have established internship programs, but could start one for the right person. And make sure you have an updated resume or CV before applying.

You’ll also need a place to live during your internship, so look on Craigslist for apartments and houses up for sublet for the duration of your time in the city. If you’re interning over the summer, some of the colleges and universities may allow you to stay in the dorms.

Media, Radio and Television

Atlanta is home to a handful of media empires, but none more famous than Turner Broadcasting, owned by Ted Turner. This company includes CNN, Cartoon Network, HLN, Adult Swim, Turner Sports, Turner Classic Movies, TBS, TNT and TruTV, among many others. Television news affiliates Fox 5, CBS CW69 also seek interns on a regular basis for a variety of positions.

Paste Magazine, based in Decatur, is a favorite publication covering music, technology, pop culture and drinks. They take on interns every semester to learn the ins and outs of the magazine business. Local publications Atlanta Magazine and Creative Loafing also take on interns.

Radio broadcasting is another large field in Atlanta. There is a large network of Clear Channel networks, including 94.9 The Bull, Power 96.1, 105.3 El Patron, Radio 105.7 and Talk Radio 640, which offer internships. Rapper and Atlanta native Ludacris got his start as an intern at Hot 97.5, so you never know what an internship could lead to.

If film production is what you’re interested in, you can start as an extra on the many film and television projects in Atlanta and the rest of Georgia and potentially even get a job as a member of the cast or crew. See Georgia’s Casting Calls page for the latest.

If you’re seeking employment in the corporate world, Atlanta is home to some of the country’s top companies.

Home Depot is the leader in home improvement supplies and has internships in the fields of marketing, merchandising, legal, human resources and many more. Perhaps no company signifies Atlanta more than Coca Cola, which offers internships lasting three months. Delta, one of the nation’s top airlines, hires interns in the fields of aerospace and engineering, as well as logistics and finance.

Newell Rubbermaid is the company behind Sharpie, Rubbermaid, Calphalon, Papermate and many others. The Atlanta-based corporation hires interns for college credit in the fields of design, finance, legal and many others. For internships in aerospace and technical fields, Lockheed Martin hires interns for their company that produces military technology at their Marietta headquarters.

For a unique internship in both corporate and fashion, apply for one of the coveted spots with Spanx, founded by Atlantan Sara Blakely.

Internships at the Georgia Aquarium are sought after in the areas of zoology and veterinary science, human resources, social media and marketing and event sales. Also in the non-profit field is the internship program at the High Museum of Art, which runs every summer for college juniors and seniors.

Technology and Startups

Atlanta is also home to the technology sector and startups like Mailchimp for infrastructure and software development. Scoutmob is a local deal site that now has dozens of app locations. They hire interns in both the technical side of app development, as well as copywriting for location descriptions.

Whatever field you’re interested in becoming a part of, Atlanta has opportunities to learn from the best in the business in both paid and unpaid or college credit internships. The low cost of living and ease of finding short term housing makes the city a great place to start your way up the corporate ladder.
