Taking a Gap Year Abroad

Taking a gap year can be a much-needed break and a time to learn about themselves for many people but it’s not for everyone. If you know exactly what you want to do with your life, are a homebody or don’t like taking risks, a gap year is not for you. However, if you are uncertain about your future studies or career and not afraid of the unexpected, then a gap year might be just what the doctor ordered.

By the end of that year, you’ll have friends all over the world which may come in very useful if you’d like to do another year in a different country or sometime in the future. In each country, work if possible, volunteer, or just stay busy during your travels to get the most out of your time. Enjoy your gap year and use that renewed energy to kick off a new school year or a new career!

Choose several countries where you may want to work someday or that you have always found interesting. If you’re doing your gap year on your own, map out what you want to do and where you want to go and then estimate how much money you’ll need. Always have backup plans for the unexpected. 1. Live like the locals, take the bus, try street food, talk to strangers and get a real feel for the culture of each place you visit.

2. Identify what you like or dislike about each place and what that says about your personality or work style.

3. Keep a journal or blog that details your experiences and it will be an extremely valuable year that you’ll never forget.

4. Most of all, stay safe. Do your research ahead of time about each country, have traveler’s insurance, know how to keep your valuables safe at all times, keep someone in the loop about where you are each day, learn basic first aid, stay in public places and always be aware of your surroundings
