Teaching English Abroad

Teaching in a foreign country can sometimes be one of the easiest ways to get into a new country. There is great demand for teachers of all kinds. English teachers especially have numerous opportunities available to them but so do teachers of other subjects and languages. First step is to see if the country of your choosing has strict requirements about the type of education or teaching certificates you should have. Second, you’ll need to choose a country and a school. As the demand usually far exceeds supply, you may have difficulty choosing just one school!

How to choose a school and teach abroad

Go ahead and apply to several schools in your desired country. If you get back some positive responses, send them a list of crucial questions such as:

1. How many hours of teaching are required?

2. Does the school provide the curriculum or do I need to come up with my own lessons?

3. What is the class size?

4. How experienced (in the subject) are the students I’ll be teaching? Are they beginners or advanced?

5. Will I be required to do other activities such as gym or lunch supervision, cleaning/decorating my classroom, etc?

6. What type of disciplinary actions does the school employ for misbehaving kids and will I need to talk to the parents of the kids I send to the principal’s office?

7. Will I have an assistant in the classroom at all times?

8. Do you have any other foreign teachers working at your school? Could I speak with them ahead of time?

9. What is the salary and does it include housing, food, airfare, visa fees or other benefits?

10. What is the vacation allowance?

When you receive answers back from the schools, choose the school that answered the questions to your liking. Typically, private schools pay higher salaries than public schools; however, in general, the kids who attend private schools are more accustomed to getting their way and may not like to listen to figures in authority positions. Yet as we all know, if you genuinely care for the kids you teach, they will most likely love you back!

Teaching Abroad Tips

1. You must absolutely talk with current or past teachers of the school. This will give you the best indication of what life will really be like for you. Do some searches online or ask the school directly. You’ll want to ensure the school has a good reputation and treats their teachers well.

2. You’d be surprised how much you can negotiate. It never hurts to ask for a few extra perks before signing your contract.

3. Do your research. Learn what teaching styles work best for this new culture. Perhaps they don’t like speaking in public or they do better in memorization then they do in creative thinking. Figure out how your students have been taught up until this point and work within that system.
