Large organizations offer graduate training schemes for 1-2 years that train entry-level employees all about their company and industry. It’s a great opportunity to learn a lot of valuable skills on the job. Oftentimes, companies will hire a large group of recent grads at one time so you may even be able to work with a few of your friends! The key to getting in to one of these programs is to apply early. Some of the companies who offer graduate schemes are Ford, Airbus, and PricewaterhouseCoopers. These companies invest in young grads with the hope that you will stay with them for the long run. If you’re looking for a stable career with well-known, trusted companies, a graduate scheme is exactly the path you should take.

How to choose a Graduate Scheme

Do your research and identify which large companies sound exciting to work for and then it can be as easy as applying to their graduate schemes online. When thinking about which company to select, ask yourself a few questions. Does working for a mid-sized company where you’ll get know people personally sound right for you? Or would you prefer to work for a company that everyone in the world knows and who might have some 50,000 employees? Does the company you’re thinking of have a “cool” culture? Or do they require you to be quite formal and follow lots of rules? Where is the company located? Are you prepared to move or want to stay close to home?

One you have the answers to these questions, you should quickly apply online to your top choices and cross your fingers for good luck!

1. Do your research and apply EARLY. The day after graduate is way too late.

2. Look into exactly what kind of training will be offered. If it’s not training for skills you’re excited about then find a different company and more interesting training program.

3. Talk with people who have been through graduate schemes themselves! Find some online forums or blogs or ask your friends or school if they know of anyone. Firsthand information is always best.
